St. Ignatius of Loyola

Soldier, pilgrim, founder of the Society of Jesus

Born in Loyola, North Spain (1491), Ignatius first pursued a military career. In 1521, during the battle of Pamplona against King Francis I of France, he was struck by a cannon shot that broke his leg. During his long convalescence at Loyola, he read devotional books — The Life of Christ and The Flower of the Saints — which led to a deep interior conversion and a desire to serve God.

1522 Pilgrimage to the Holy Land; spiritual awakening
1524–35 Studies philosophy and theology in Barcelona, Alcalá, Salamanca, and Paris
1534 Gathers first companions (including St. Francis Xavier) in Paris — foundation of the Society of Jesus
1540 Society of Jesus approved by Pope Paul III
Ignatius’ vision emphasized excellence, discernment, and service. His legacy continues today through Jesuit institutions worldwide, shaping minds and hearts for the greater good of humanity.
